We discussed it a lot with other degu breeders and found out, that it very frequent thing, almost half of degus have bald front paws. First we thought that it could be from bedding, but because change in bedding didn't help, we came to the conclusion that it's just a bad habit - degus chew fur on their front paws. Maybe you just didn't notice degu doing this.
